New simulation training lab in budget boost for Port Pirie Hospital

Port Pirie Hospital will get a brand new Clinical Simulation Training Laboratory to assist with training health workers, as part of an $8.6 million investment in the hospital in the State Budget.

The laboratory will be part of a new Multi Profession Simulated Training and Development (MPSTD) Service.

The MPSTD Service will provide a local environment for medical, nursing, allied health clinicians and other clinical students to undertake simulated learning whilst on placement at Port Pirie Hospital.

It will also support the ongoing education and development of existing staff in the Yorke and Northern Local Health Network and the broader community.

The investment in this year’s budget follows a $12 million investment in 2022-23 to fund an upgrade of the Port Pirie Hospital emergency department.

Last month, the State and Federal governments announced a new trial to attract and retain more doctors in regional and rural South Australia.

Under the new Single Employer Model, GP and rural generalist registrars will have the option of being employed by the South Australian Health Service as salaried employees, supporting up to 60 additional GPs at any one time.

The State Government is committed to investing in health care in the regions.

On the back of a $12 million upgrade to the Port Pirie Hospital emergency department, this new Multi Profession Simulated Training and Development Service will ensure Port Pirie Hospital remains a leading provider of health services in the Upper Spencer Gulf.

This is a great outcome for the Port Pirie community.

In the past couple of years, we have seen more than $20 million invested in the hospital.

Attracting and retaining health workers is of vital importance in regional South Australia and it’s great news that more health workers will be able to undertake training on the ground here in Port Pirie.
