FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
1 April 2025
The Independent Member for Stuart raised a question in Parliament today, asking whether the State Government is considering additional assistance for struggling rural primary producers in regional South Australia. These producers, particularly in the northern part of the Stuart Electorate, continue to face severe challenges due to prolonged drought conditions.
Geoff Brock referenced previous correspondence to the Premier, including a letter signed by all State Members of the Cross Bench urging further support for affected communities.
In response, the Premier acknowledged the seriousness of the situation and confirmed that the State Government is actively exploring assistance measures. A Round Table discussion will be convened with key stakeholders and farmers from across the State to gather detailed insights on how both the Government and industry can provide meaningful relief, particularly in securing
fodder for livestock.
The roundtable will include representatives from:
• Primary Producers SA
• Grain Producers SA
• Livestock SA
• Horticulture Coalition of SA
• SA Fresh Food Growers
• Wine Grape Council of SA
• Rural Business Support
• Grain and Dairy farmers, lamb and beef cattle producers
Additionally, the Minister for Primary Industries and Regional Development will participate in the discussions.
The Premier further indicated that an assistance package is being developed. Notably, the Treasurer suggested that action may be able to wait until the State Budget is handed down in June, raising the possibility of earlier intervention.
Geoff Brock also requested that consideration be given to supporting the commercial sectors in smaller communities during the roundtable discussions, recognising the broader economic impact of the drought on local businesses.
