Governor’s Civics Awards for Schools

The Governor’s Civics Awards for Schools is a cross-sector initiative open to all South Australian schools, including government, Catholic and independent. The awards aim to develop student awareness and skills as active and informed citizens in a multicultural and democratic society.

2020 Governor’s Civics Awards for Schools

In 2020 the awards are available for years 5 to 12 and include individual, group and school categories.

In the individual category students will respond to a history and/or civics question. In the group category schools will submit the work of a school group in the area of civic involvement. The schools category invites schools to nominate their civics and citizenship education program as an example of outstanding practice.

A maximum of 4 individual student entries and 2 group nominations per school can be forwarded for judging by the Governor’s Civics Awards for Schools judging panel.

2019 Governor’s Civics Awards for Schools

In 2019 the Governor’s Civics Awards for Schools was a trial program for year 5 students only. From 2020 the program will be open to students from years 5 to 12.

The focus of the individual category in 2019 was the establishment of the South Australian colony in the 19th Century. Students were invited to submit either an audio (2 minutes) or written response (maximum 500 words) on the question: Why is it important for young people to know about the establishment and early years of the South Australian colony?

The 2019 group award focused on living in a democracy as an engaged and active citizen. Schools were invited to nominate a group of students in their school who demonstrated outstanding civic involvement.
