Rural Crime Crackdown to be Paid for by Residents

Member for Frome Geoff Brock MP is appalled that South Australian Rural communities have had to resort toraising their own money to crack down on rural and regional crime.

“After hearing that Crime Stoppers SA have had to ask the public to donate to a Go Fund Me campaign,I am concerned that the State Government doesn’t take the welfare of rural communities seriously,” Mr Brock said.

“I know that crime in rural areas is increasing with almost daily incidents of farm crime around the State. Brazen thieves have been entering rural properties in my electorate during the day, stealing tools, vehicles and equipment, while livestock thefts continue to be of major concern.”

Mr Brock said Crime Stoppers played an important part in raising community awareness and in the development of crime prevention campaigns, with 100% of all money received being spent on these initiatives.

“Crime Stoppers is a not for profit organisation which aims to prevent and solve crime in South Australia.”

“Through their work Crime Stoppers have been responsible in the apprehension of 21,367 criminals resulting in 32,496 solved cases and the recovery of $9.5m of stolen property,” Mr Brock said.

“I am calling on the State Government to provide support for this critical initiative to help reduced rural crime. Our communities should not have to put their hands in their own pockets for crime prevention initiatives which are clearly a State Government role.”

Mr Brock said he would be writing to Police Minister Corey Wingard urging him to consider funding for Crime Stoppers SA.

“We need to keep all our communities safe,” Mr Brock said.
