The ‘horror’ Horrocks Highway has been in the media lately, together with demands for an immediate upgrade to ensure the safety of both freight and tourism travellers, but Member for Frome Geoff Brock MP has had an upgrade campaign in his sights since 2009.

Mr Brock began lobbying State Government regarding the road’s condition nearly a decade ago and despite promises there has been no consistent effort to make major changes to this undulating highway, voted as the State’s most dangerous road by RAA members.

“Horrocks Highway, which runs from Gawler to Wilmington, was renamed from Main North Road in 2011 to honour explorer John Horrocks and some areas are not a lot better than the camel track Horrocks would have used to travel north,” Mr Brock said.

“The statistics on the road tell us there were 74 crashes resulting in injury on the 90km stretch from Gawler to Clare between 2012 and 2016 resulting in 109 casualties and 4 deaths.”

“I have grave concerns for future road users travelling Horrocks Highway from Clare to Gawler, and like others who have lobbied for improvement, do not want to see anyone else receive an injury or suffer due to the condition of this road.

“It is time for a long-term plan for major road improvements to Horrocks Highway.”

Mr Brock was pleased to see a pre-election promise from Shadow Transport Minister, David Pisoni, committing to the project, advising “Horrocks Highway will be a priority of the Liberal Government”.

Liberal Candidate for Frome also announced the Liberal Government had committed to a Royalties for Regions program which is expected to see about $750 million invested in regional roads and infrastructure over the next decade.

“I trust that this road is high on the Governments agenda and will receive the funding necessary.  I call on the Liberal Government to honour these election statements, and I look forward to meeting with the Minister to progress this serious issue.”
