Project Update – Rest Area Closure

The Department for Infrastructure and Transport (the Department) is undertaking pavement rehabilitation and widening works on four sections of the Barrier Highway (two located east of Manna Hill and two west of Cockburn), totalling a combined 26 kilometres, and a 4 kilometre section of shoulder sealing works east of Manna Hill.

This project is jointly funded (80:20) by the Australian and South Australian governments as part of the Roads of Strategic Importance program and the Road Safety Stimulus Package.

The project will deliver essential safety upgrades and improvements along the Barrier Highway. It will provide economic benefits for regional South Australia and New South Wales through improved connectivity and freight productivity.

The works will create a safer and quieter experience for road users and will preserve the road surface for years to come. Providing sealed shoulders will improve safety for motorists by reducing the risk of ‘run-off road’ type crashes.

Works include:
• pavement rehabilitation;
• pavement widening;
• shoulder sealing; and
• line marking.

Works are underway and are being undertaken from 6:30am to 5:30pm, seven days a week. Completion is expected in the third quarter of 2022, weather permitting.

As part of construction works, the unsealed rest area located adjacent to the east bound lane of the Barrier Highway, approximately 60 kilometres east of the Yunta township, will be closed from Friday, 15 July 2022, to mid-September 2022, weather permitting.

To safely undertake these works, speed and lane restrictions will be in place. Road users are asked to please plan ahead, allow extra travel time and take extra care when workers are on site. Observe speed limits, lane restrictions and traffic controllers when travelling through the area.

Outside of work hours speed and lane restrictions will remain in place subject to onsite conditions. Once works are complete for each stage, speed restrictions will remain in place along the newly resurfaced section for approximately two weeks, weather permitting, until line marking is completed.

Access to properties will be maintained throughout the works wherever possible, with advance notice provided if there is a need to temporarily restrict driveway access.

You may also notice some odour which is common when bituminous works are underway.
